Art is frequently seen as just a creative outlet, but its impact can be profound. For our students, it can offer a safe way to express emotions and experiences that they have a hard time putting into words. We have witnessed so many transformative moments with our ArtReach 180 kids.
One of these moments involved a student that was a particularly challenging case. Referred to our program by his probation officer, he arrived with a clear message: “I DON’T WANT TO BE HERE”. He was resistant to participation of any kind. Group discussions were met with silence or “I don’t know”, and his art pieces were done as if he just wanted them over with. He had erected a pretty clear wall between us and him.
But we continued to patiently create the supportive environment that we want all ArtReach 180 campuses to be, hoping to gradually chip away at the barriers. Then came our tissue paper lantern project. This student seemed to spend extra time pondering over what to do. Eventually, he constructed a simple piece with just a layer of red tissue paper underneath a light blue one. You could see the red showing through and distorting the color of the blue piece over it. At first glance, it looked as if this was another piece that was done just to be finished with it.
But when asked to share about his piece, for the first time, he had an answer. “It is meant to represent how much anger I have burning underneath. I try to cover it up with a cool appearance, but it still shows through and messes up how people see me.”
It was only two sentences, but it was the first time he’d ever cracked the door in the wall open for us. The first time he had voluntarily shared a peak at his emotions. This breakthrough was a huge moment for him and our group. And it was an amazing example of why this program exists. ArtReach 180 creates a safe and trusting environment for teens to work through the things they are feeling and find the strength to express themselves authentically. If they can’t do it with words, they can do it with their art. This student’s journey is far from over, but this breakthrough is a sign that he’s on the right path. And it is a reminder that even the most guarded kids can find a voice in the right place.
